Colin Howard is a Consultant Chartered Forensic Psychologist, Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society, Accredited Psychotherapist, EMDR Europe Accredited Clinical Supervisor/Consultant, and Registered Practising Forensic and Clinical Psychologist. Colin Howard has over twenty-three years’ experience in the assessment and treatment of individuals with mental health difficulties in both the public and private sector using a variety of evidence-based psychotherapies. The therapies used are varied and include Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, EMDR, Lifespan Integration, the Comprehensive Resource Model, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, and Deep Brain Reorienting. The treatment approach used at Howard Psychology is integrative as this allows for each treatment plan to be created to meet the needs of each individual.

Colin has gained significant experience in assessing and treating various dysfunctional attachment styles which have evolved as a coping mechanism to deal with problems related to adverse childhood experiences. He has worked with individuals presenting with complex problems and histories of complex trauma, and has a particular interest in, and experience of, working with complex trauma. Colin has gained expertise in assessing and treating individuals who have been subject to various types of complex psychological trauma including physical, emotional and sexual abuse, parental separation and loss, attachment problems and bereavement.
In addition to his mental health experience, Colin has significant experience in providing psychological and risk assessment reports for both Civil, Family and Criminal cases. Colin has expertise in risk assessment and management of violent and sexually violent offenders in the prison environment and in the community.
In 1998, Colin Howard gained a BSc (Hons) in Applied Psychology at Cardiff University, and obtained an MSc in Forensic (Legal and Criminological) Psychology, in 1999, from Glasgow Caledonian University. In 2003, he also attained a Post Graduate Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy, whilst at the University of Dundee. Colin completed all three levels of EMDR training in 2006, and gained Accredited EMDR Practitioner status in 2011. In 2014, Colin completed his Accredited EMDR Europe Consultant and Supervisor training. In 2014, Colin completed the level 1 and level 2 training in working with EMDR and Children.

In 2008, Colin completed several trainings in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, with Dr Janina Fisher. In 2009 and 2010, Colin completed Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Modules 1 and 2, with Dr Andrew Harkin, and modules 3 and 4, with Dr Andrew Harkin and Dr Janina Fisher. Colin completed level 1 and level 2 in Lifespan Integration, with Peggy Pace and Cathy Thorpe, in 2010. Colin also completed training in Brainspotting, with Phil Dutton and Lisa Schwartz, in 2012 and 2013. Colin has completed Comprehensive Resource Model Core and Intensive trainings, in 2014 and 2015, with Lisa Schwartz. He has also attended specialist case conceptualisation and treatment of DID, with Lisa Schwartz, in 2015. Colin has been an assistant trainer at Sensorimotor Psychotherapy trainings, in 2011, and Comprehensive Resource Model trainings, in 2015. Colin also completed Deep Brain Reorienting (DBR) trainings, Basic, Advanced, Attachment, and working with Dissociative Disorders, in 2019, 2021, 2022, 2024 and 2025. Colin was one of the facilitators who assisted Dr Frank Corrigan deliver the DBR Basic Training in October 2022, and September 2024, and DBR Dissociation and Complex Trauma in December 2022 and in November 2023.

Colin has provided trainings in: Understanding Trauma, the Impact of Psychological trauma, Trauma, Men and Violence, Trauma and Offending, Working with Complex Trauma and Dissociation, and the Neurobiological Basis of Trauma to organisations including: The Scottish Prison Service, Dublin Rape Crisis Centre, The Scottish Police Service, West Mercia Police, Shropshire Domestic Abuse Service, Axis Counselling Service, Hope for Justice, Social Work Departments in a number of different Local Authorities in England and Scotland, and at specialist trauma focused conferences.

Colin is registered as a Chartered Forensic Psychologist with the British Psychological Society (BPS), and is a member of the Division of Forensic Psychology. He is a Registered Practising Forensic and Clinical Psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and as an Accredited Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist with the British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapists (BABCP). Colin is an EMDR Europe Accredited Clinical Supervisor/Consultant. He is also a member of the UK Psychological Trauma Society (UKPTS), The International Society for the Study of Dissociation (ISSTD), the European Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ESTSS), and has previously been part of the Membership Committee, Research Committee, and a UK Representative of the ESTD (European Society for Trauma and Dissociation).
